July for Black Women logo 2021 edition
In 1992, Black women organized the first Meeting of Latin and Caribbean Black Women, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where they discussed issues such as machismo, racism and different ways to fight them. From this meeting, a network of Black women emerged that remains united to this day. The meeting also gave birth to the Latin and Caribbean Black Women's Day, remembered every 25th of July, a date that was recognized by the UN in 1992.
In Brazil, former president Dilma Rousseff officially made the day a national commemoration. Here, since 2014, the “National Day of Tereza de Benguela and Black Women” has been celebrated on July 25th – in honor of the quilombola (maroon community resident) leader Tereza de Benguela who lived in the 18th century and was killed in an ambush.
Julho das Pretas is a collective agenda with Black women's organizations and movements in Bahia, the Northeast region, and some other states in the country, aimed to strengthen Black women's organizations. Created in 2013 by Odara – Instituto da Mulher Negra (Salvador - Bahia), Julho das Pretas celebrates the 25th of July, the International Day of African-Latin American and Caribbean Black Women.
This year we have the 9th edition of Julho das Pretas, with the theme “For Genocidal Brazil, Black Women point out the Solution!”.
This theme was approved at an open meeting convened by the Network of Black Women from the Northeast on June 4th, by which we affirm that the genocidal project underway in Brazil is not new. The genocide of Black and Indigenous people was the colonial methodology for this country’s foundation. We want to say that we Black People have been suffering genocide in many ways, long before the covid-19 pandemic.
The coronavirus pandemic in Brazil intensifies the genocide against us, the Black population, not solely because we are the majority of the virus’ lethal victims, but mainly because the Brazilian bourgeoisie, in close alliance with the Brazilian state and government, has been using the climate of public calamity to: intensify the violent actions from the police, invade quilombola (maroon) and indigenous communities, naturalize the existence of hunger in such a rich country in natural resources, reject cases of domestic violence and judgments in cases of femicide, and to legitimize the total disregard for the human rights of Black people, especially Black women.
With this theme, we want to say that we, Black women, political subjects organized in all spheres of Brazilian society, are reflecting and pointing out solutions for Brazil, starting from the anti-racist, anti-patriarchal and anti-capitalist fight!

The actions of “Julho das Pretas” have already brought up important and necessary themes related to overcoming gender and racial inequalities, putting the political agenda of Black women in evidence, challenging the hegemonic powers and showing how the process of construction, collaboration and autonomy of Black networks is powerful and has a strong foundation. Black women's movements in Brazil resist! Long live the July for Black Women!!

Em 1992, mulheres negras organizaram o primeiro Encontro de Mulheres Negras Latinas e Caribenhas, em Santo Domingos, na República Dominicana, em que discutiram sobre machismo, racismo e formas de combatê-los. Daí surgiu uma rede de mulheres que permanece unida até hoje. Do encontro, nasceu também o Dia da Mulher Negra Latina e Caribenha, lembrado todo 25 de julho, data que foi reconhecida pela ONU ainda em 1992.
No Brasil, a presidenta Dilma Rousseff transformou a data em comemoração nacional. Aqui, desde 2014, comemora-se em 25 de julho o Dia Nacional de Tereza de Benguela e da Mulher Negra – em homenagem à líder quilombola que viveu no século 18 e que foi morta em uma emboscada.
Na Bahia, o Julho das Pretas é uma agenda conjunta e propositiva com organizações e movimento de mulheres negras da Bahia, região Nordeste, e mais alguns estados do país, voltada para o fortalecimento das organizações de mulheres negras. Criado em 2013, pelo Odara – Instituto da Mulher Negra (Salvador- Bahia), o Julho das Pretas celebra o 25 de Julho, Dia Internacional da Mulher Negra Afro Latina-americana e Caribenha.
Esse ano temos a 9ª edição do Julho das Pretas, com tema “Para o Brasil Genocida, Mulheres Negras apontam a Solução!”.
O tema acima foi aprovado em reunião aberta convocada pela Rede de Mulheres Negras do Nordeste no dia 04 de junho, com ele queremos dizer que não é novo o projeto genocida em curso no Brasil. O genocídio dos povos pretos e indígenas foi justamente a metodologia colonial de fundação do país. Queremos dizer, que nós, pessoas negras, sofremos genocídio de diversas formas, muito antes da pandemia da covid-19.
A pandemia do coronavírus no Brasil serviu para intensificar o genocídio contra nós, população negra, não apenas porque somos a maioria das vítimas letais da doença, mas principalmente porque os ricos e poderosos da nação, em fina aliança com o Estado e o governo brasileiro, tem utilizado o clima de calamidade pública para intensificar as ações violentas das polícias nas periferias do país; para invadir comunidades quilombolas e indígenas; naturalizar a existência da fome em um país tão rico em recursos naturais; não acolher os casos de violência doméstica e não seguir com julgamentos de casos de feminicídio; naturalizar ainda mais as mortes maternas, tão evitáveis; e legitimar o total descaso com os direitos humanos das pessoas negras, sobretudo das mulheres negras.
Com este tema, queremos dizer que nós, mulheres negras, sujeitas políticas organizadas em todas as esferas da sociedade brasileira, estamos refletindo e apontando soluções para o Brasil, a partir da luta antirracista, antipatriarcal, anticapitalista e pelo Bem Viver!

As ações do Julho das Pretas já trouxeram temas importantes e necessários relacionados à superação das desigualdades de gênero e raça, colocando a pauta e agenda política das mulheres negras em evidência, desafiando os poderes hegemônicos e mostrando como o processo de construção, colaboração e autonomia das redes negras é potente e tem fundamento forte. Os movimentos de mulheres negras no Brasil resistem! Vida longa ao Julho das Pretas!
